| Description: | Susan Fassberg called me to tell me about this terrific website that provides a FREE weekly menu of carefully selected upcoming television broadcasts and cable programs that contain valuable educational material that is useful for students in classrooms - but is also ideal for those learning at home. The developers of this site are Richard Kahlenberg, an educational media reporter, and Tim Collings who invented the V-chip technology in 1989. They created this website to help guide parents and children to programs that support academic performance. When you get to the site, you'll see the weekly "TV Smarts" menu. In any given week, it includes programming that covers subjects such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, foreign languages, geography, and history and are based on the strictest state curricula standards. Programs are also selected based on what classroom students and teachers say they wish had been available when competitive exams were administered in their schools. As explained at the website, "Recent research about the learning habits of children points out two hours of television or other video-based material should be the daily maximum. Mental and physical health can be negatively affected by exposure beyond that level." This website tries to direct parents and students to getting the best value for the two hours of daily time spent. Use the information at the site to mark your TV guide to provide the best possible programming that will expand your student's understanding of a variety of subject material. Because the menu changes weekly, you'll want to bookmark this site to get the latest programming selections each week. |
