| Smithsonian's George Washington: The Portrait |
ClickScholar Chris recommended this website that served as a companion to a traveling exhibit of a portrait of George Washington painted by artist Gilbert Stuart. The exhibit is over, however, this website continues to provide an opportunity to learn about George Washington by exploring the
symbolism depicted in the painting through interactive puzzles - one designed for kids, and one for everyone else |
When you get to the site you'll see the portrait and a link to click in order to launch the interactive exhibit intended for all visitors.
Use the menu at the top of the page to find these features:
*Kids - This section invites kids to follow clues and help solve a make-believe mystery! Using a virtual spyglass, kids can uncover hidden symbols in the painting and learn fascinating facts about Washington. On the kids' page you'll also find:
1) A Teacher Guide - Download a pdf that contains detailed lessons and activities themed around the portrait that furthers
learning about Washington and U.S. History.
2) A Family Guide - Originally designed to help families who visited the exhibit, it provides questions and ideas to spark
interest and discussion about the painting. Use it while you look at the portrait online.
*Washington's Life - Use the timeline to explore Washington's early military career, his role in the American Revolution, his civilian life, and his presidency.
This is a terrific resource that will enhance learning in any home or school environment.
