Resource:Free Calendar of Historical Dates
Provider:Teacher Vision
Summary:A free downloadable/printable calendar full of important dates in history. A jumping off point for studying different topics.
Description:How many of us homeschool parents are always on the look out for new and interesting ideas for learning opportunities? Teacher Vision is offering a free downloadable calendar that will help the educator in all of us. Just click on http://www.teachervision.fen.com/holidays-and-seasonal-events/printable/55993.html and explore what the calendar has to offer.

Each day of 2008 you will find historic events and dates that we don’t normally know off the top of our heads. The topics are not just typical holidays and would be great to study. For example: Jupiter’s Moons were discovered January 7, 1610. Or how about showing the youngsters to use a phone book on February 21? That is the anniversary of the first phone book being issued (1878)? And for the Nascar fans, did you know the Indianapolis 500 debuted May 30, 1911?

Throughout the calendar are weekly “events” such as National Police Week May 11-17, Smile Week August 3-9 and National Chemistry Week October 19-25. These topics would be fun to plan an entire weeks worth of fun activities and learning around.

At the bottom of each month is a list of “Month-long Holidays and Events”. From Computer Learning Month in October to Kids Good Manners Month in September it opens a door to planning some great units. Or maybe you could plan a different course of study for handwriting in December as it is Write to a Friend Month.

I have not used this calendar before but it offers so many interesting pieces of history I can’t wait to jump in. I also have a trivia buff in the house and I can imagine this will be studied immensely for the little oddities that aren’t already known.
