| Garfield themed lesson activities along with teacher resources explaining the science and importance of sleep. |
February 28th is Public Sleep Day. Take this time to talk about the importance of sleep with your youngsters.
Using the lesson outline provided by The National Institute of Health, you and Garfield will help your kidlets track their sleep, understand the sleep needs of different animals and explore different sleep environments. There are pages to print, charts to keep and posters to be made. There are also links to resources for us teachers to use that include a PowerPoint presentation explaining the science behind sleep and hints on getting a good night's sleep.
We did this sleep unit last summer and the kids learned a lot. They liked the Garfield worksheets and tidbits of information. Did it improve their sleeping habits? Yes and no. But learning the importance of sleep was the overall goal and is a great subject to approach with all your kids!
For some sleep fun check out Professor Garfield.* After a short introduction, that you can skip if you want, you will find a few online games dealing with sleep. Mission Z has been a big hit here!
