Resource:The Iditarod - An Alaskan Adventure
Provider:The Solution Site
Summary:A six part lesson about the Iditarod using Jack London's The Call of the Wild.
Description:Learn the history, weather, trails and health issues encountered by Mushers on the Iditarod trail using The Call of the Wild by Jack London in this multifaceted lesson plan unit.

There are 6 separate lesson plans included in this unit. The first lesson plan has activities pertaining to The Call of the Wild. Designing a book cover and making a theme book is the main activity. A link to The Call of the Wild Internet text is included.

The second lesson is the Iditarod history. Your students will learn the history of the dogs, trails and race. Only one link in this lesson works but I would recommend going to the official Iditarod site* to gather information.

Learn about Alaskan weather in lesson three. You will need a separate "weather unit" or workbook pages and maps to help chart the weather. The links to the maps are not working in this plan but a search on google will produce many maps and weather pages for you to choose from.

Since the links in lesson 4 also don't work, I would use this opportunity to be creative and learn mapping skills by printing out a blank map of Alaska and pinpointing the route. There is a daily standings worksheet at the bottom of the page that your child can fill out to record the top 10 mushers

For lesson 5, your child will use Internet sites and encyclopedias to gain knowledge by comparing and contrasting the state they live in with the state of Alaska. If you live in Alaska, have your child pick a state of his or her choosing to compare with. Once again, the links do not work.

Learning the risks the mushers take is lesson 6. You will define hypothermia and frostbite as well as learn the symptoms and signs of each. You will also learn how to properly care for the sled dogs to keep them protected from the bitter cold. Links again don't work.

I really like the content and idea of this lesson/unit. Unfortunately, there are a lot of links that don't work making the "premade" lessons not so easy. But if you are like me, you will take this opportunity to find the maps and reading materials that fit into your childs personality!
