Resource:Growing a Pineapple at Home
Provider:Purdue.edu
Summary:A terrific science experiment using the top of a pineapple to grow your own pineapple plant at home!
Description:This isn't exactly seasonal, but in light of the cold and snow and ice that we have been experiencing, we needed a little tropical pick me up. Besides what homechooling parent doesn't want to have an ongoing science experiment? Especially one that hopefully will be able to be eaten in the end!

We recently purchased a fresh pineapple. With that came conversation about where pineapples grow and can WE grow one? I honestly didn't know, so went to my friend, Mr. Internet. Up came many pineapple-growing pages but this lesson was the one I went with. If you scroll about a third of the way down the page you will find the link "Growing a Pineapple at Home". Clicking on that will open a PDF for you to print.

This lesson gives you step-by-step instructions on how to start your pineapple plant at home. Patience is a virtue here because it can take weeks to just get your plant started and years to actually produce the fruit.

Written by Purdue Botanists, not only do the writers give you information on how to start the plant; you are also given general information on the pineapple itself and pineapple plant care for when the plant actually starts growing. For more tips on growing your plant and pictures of what the plant and flower will look like check out Wikihow**.

Toward the end of the document there are websites to visit pertaining to pineapple history, propagation and recipes! As with all science experiments, failure can be a significant source of frustration. Growing pineapples is no exception and letting your younger kids know that will help. It is difficult to grow these plants at home, but once you have succeeded, the payoff is delish!
