Picturing First Families
EDSITEment
Take President's Day to compare and contrast today's First Family with America's First Family and find out Why George Washington's face is featured on our currency.
How is today's First Family different from America's First Family?
You will find the answer while working on this lesson. Picturing First Families is a great lesson plan offered by EDSITEment. In this lesson your student will compare and contrast pictures of the First Family to those of George and Martha Washington. A great discussion can be had concerning how portraits are made today versus 200 years ago.
Students will visit various websites such as The National Portrait Gallery. While at the gallery your student will view various pictures of President and Mrs. Washington. A brief summary of each picture will give important information concerning the photograph. Other websites are recommended for use by students, use them at your own discretion. I suggest looking at The Whitehouse for Kids. My kids love taking the various tours.
In addition to learning more about the first families and how they have changed through the years, students will discover why George Washington is on our currency. During this study, myths and facts about our First president will be brought forth for your students to discuss.
Extensions to this lesson are located at the bottom of the page. They include learning more about George and Martha Washington and making a personal family portrait. How about setting up a "presidential photo op" for your family? Wouldn't it be a great reason to have a family picture taken? Study the photos and go wild!
