Resource:Tie Dye With Sharpie Markers!
Provider:Steve Spangler Science
Summary:Celebrate White T-Shirt Day on February 11 with a cool wearable science experiment!
Description:February 11 is White T-shirt Day! Let's celebrate with a tie-dyeing science experiment! This lesson plan features an easy to do, less messy (in my opinion) way to tie dye materials. No buckets of water, no rubber gloves, just a white t-shirt, some squeeze bottles, rubbing alcohol and sharpie markers. How cool is that?

This experiment shows how colors spread and mix using a specific solution and how molecules move. There is a short video showing the experiment that can be used in conjunction with the instructions. Sometimes showing the kiddos how it is done makes the work easier. This project will take some time, as small areas are tie dyed at one time and must dry before being moved. Try using bigger work areas (like a coffee can) rather than the plastic cup called for in the directions. It will take more rubbing alcohol to spread it, but will work.

Even the youngest child can do this experiment but as rubbing alcohol is dangerous, please make sure your children are properly supervised and that you are in a well ventilated area. In the end, you will have a wearable artistic piece of art showing that molecules do indeed move. Have fun!
