Description:

Put a new twist on an old favorite and have some fun while counting syllables. Using the two handouts included in this lesson plan, your homeschooler will get to "re-write" the song The Twelve Day's of Christmas...Valentine's Day style!

After reading and discussing the story "Arthur's Valentine" by Marc Brown, your child will make a list of Valentine's Day gifts from the book and count the syllables of each word. (My kids like to make a clapping game of counting syllables.) Once the syllables are counted, he or she will count the syllables in the song The Twelve Day's of Christmas contained in the first handout.

Then comes the fun part. Using the second handout, your child will fill in the blanks creating a new version of the song. They can use words from their list or make up their own. Encourage them to be as creative as they want as long as they stick with the original syllable pattern.

The lesson plan states to share with the rest of the class. Encourage your homeschooler to share their song by singing it for the family before supper.

This is a great review for counting syllables and a wonderful exercise for using descriptive language.
