Summary:2008 The Year of the Rat---Celebrate Chinese New Year by combining history, customs and hands on activities.
Description:2008: The Year of the Rat

Why are houses cleaned, debts paid off, doors and windows painted in anticipation of Chinese New Year? You will find out while completing this lesson with your homeschooler.

Provided is a brief background of the holiday that contains thoughts of the holiday's origin, information about the lunar and solar calendars and traditions/customs that are still recognized today. A list of student objectives, procedures, resources, suggested reading books and Chinese good luck symbols are provided for additional help.

The activities are as follows
:
Learn what a tradition is and talk to your kids about traditions within your own family. What traditions did you grow up with, what traditions do you still observe? This is a great chance to strengthen family traditions both old and new. Have fun and open up to your youngling...they will appreciate it.

Have a guest speaker who has celebrated Chinese New Year talk about things they heard or did. This is a perfect opportunity for a field trip to the local Chinese Restaurant. I know the owner of ours is very open and willing to talk about her customs. Call and find out if yours is.

Your students will learn it is a belief that persons born in the animal year have the characteristics of that animal. A Chinese Zodiac chart is included for the children to fill out and use to see which "year" they were born. They will have a blast comparing the characteristics of the different animals to everyone in the family. Believe me, it can go on for days.

Hands on activities include making a dragon head and performing the dragon dance, making red envelopes to give to family and friends (we do this for the kids each year, they love it), painting fireworks and making good luck symbols to hang on the walls.

This is a well structured, informative and easy lesson plan that will be a fun addition to your February learning. It is indicated that the grade level for this 2nd-3rd but definitely can be made to fit other levels of learning.
