M+M=YUM
Use Valentine candy for edible math! |
Take those pink, red and white Valentine M&Ms, make some cookies and do some math! Oh YUM! Using the recipe supplied with this lesson your whole family will get involved to see who has the most valuable cookie! Those of you who have peanut allergies in the house will want to find a suitable replacement for this recipe and those who eat all natural will need to find suitable replacements for some of the ingredients. If you dont want to make this big batch use the recipe converter to cut the recipe down. *
Before making the cookies, you the teacher, will create math problems to be completed before eating the statistics. A sample math problem is contained in the lesson plan as well as ideas for tying the lesson all together. This can be as involved as you want it to be. Try letting the kids make up problems, make a graph of how many M&Ms are put in the dough, find the average amount of M&Ms found in each cookie, put a value on each color and find out how much your cookie is worth. Dont just follow what is in the lesson
go wild!
This is a great lesson plan to use for an afternoon of kitchen science and math. Children will have a great time making cookies together and those competitive bunches will have a great time finding out whose cookie is the most valuable.
