Resource:Does the Groundhog do a Good Job of Predicting the Weather?
Provider:Grand Island Public School--Betty Foster
Summary:A six week research project to see just if the Groundhog is an accuate forecaster.
Description:Is the Groundhog a reliable weather forecaster? That is the question you and your homeschoolers will be trying to answer with this. This lesson definitely meant for public school teachers and you will need to tweak it in places to fit your homeschool, BUT it has great ideas and information that will be valuable in finding out if the old adage is true: Will there be 6 more weeks of winter if the groundhog sees his shadow?

The designer of this lesson plan, a public school teacher from Nebraska, gives a brief description, overview and objectives as well as Nebraska state standards. She then offers step-by-step ideas to get things into full swing.

In this lesson plan your kids will get a general knowledge of Spring, groundhogs, weather patterns and eventually find out if the groundhog is a reliable weather forecaster through read alouds, computer research, collaboration with other homeschoolers and collection of weather data. A graph of the results as well as a mural/poster showing the groundhog hibernating and seeing his shadow will be the final projects that bring it all together.

This lesson plan is for a 6-week research project starting on Groundhog Day. It requires information from other participants and will need to be thought out and organized earlier in the year. The lesson plan itself appears at the bottom of the website. While scrolling through it you will find data from the public school that did this science research project in 2000 as well as a link to the 2001 data.

Wouldn’t this be a great project to do this amongst the homeschool community? I can't wait to see all your projects next year!
