| New Year Celebrations Around the World |
| Georgia Standards |
| An easy to use website offering lesson plans to 5 cultural New Year Celebrations. |
Why not start 2008 out by learning how different cultures celebrate their New Year? Georgia Standards, New Year Celebrations Around the World will help you do just that.
Using the lesson plans offered on this easy to use site, you and your 3rd grader will learn the New Year traditions of 5 different cultures. The lessons have printable worksheets and links to help the learning process. There are a variety of subjects touched upon including reading, writing, cultures and oral communication.
After reading the background of the Diwali (Hindu), Shogatsu (Japanese) and Tet (Vietnamese) traditions your kids will then complete a variety of tasks pertaining to each celebration. From playing Uno* and discussing the meaning of luck to making Japanese-style postcards for sending to familyand friends to learning why fireworks were banned from Vietnamese celebrations, these lessons have a lot of information to offer.
Learning about Rosh Hannah (Jewish) takes a different course in that you discuss the importance of traditions after viewing the song Traditions from Fiddler on the Roof. Dont worry if you dont have the movie or the play isnt being preformed at your local theatre because the song is available at http://youtube.com/watch?v=gRdfX7ut8gw. There are other versions also available, just do a search for it. (As always, be sure to preview any video and website before allowing your children to view it) Now with that being said, I did not find Rosh Hannah easy to work with at all. The information was not all available for download when I used it. I completey skipped step 2. As for step 3, we only read over some of the information contained on the website provided. No roles assigned. We also "share" what we learn with everyone at the supper table so how step 4 is used is completely up to you. The whole lesson plan can be worked around but it isn't set up as complete and homeschool friendly as I like.
Learning about the Chinese New Year is all about DRAGONS. Drawing dragons and listening to a dragon legend to begin with. Then your student will celebrate the Chinese New Year in style by following directions and making their own paper dragon.
In about a day you and your homeschooler can learn how 5 different cultures celebrate New Years and have projects to show from it.
*A printable Uno game is available for download at http://kidscrafts.suite101.com/article.cfm/charlotte_s_web_uno, instructions for Uno are at http://www.noprivilege.com/ab/uno-howto.html and printable scorecards are available here: http:// www.centralconnector.com/pdfs/unoscorecard.pdf . |
