| Lesson Plans on Ancestors in America, includingCoolies, Sailors and Settlers, and the Chinese-Americans |
"The following classroom guides have been designed to help educators use the ANCESTORS IN THE AMERICAS series and companion web site in history, geography and social studies classes (grade levels 9-12). The lesson plans may also be adapted for use as stand-alone exercises. Resource lists for further work have also been provided. (Previewing Before the Video) explores some of the characteristics of the documentary film form and encourages students to view ANCESTORS IN THE AMERICAS and other television media with a more critical and conscious perspective. Particular emphasis is placed on looking at how the creation of films and history are influenced by approach and perspective.
"Coolies, Sailors and Settlers: Voyage to the New World" uses the emigration of Asians to North and South America as an example through which to consider how elements like race, economy and geography can affect the movement of communities around the world. "Chinese in the Frontier West: An American Story" looks into Chinese in the American West in the 19th century as a case study of a new immigrant community adapting and coping. The effects of culture, work, religion and social changes on communities are carefully considered. Perceptions of who is an American and what rights that status affords are also explored." |
