Summary:Help Grandma Brown get to her grandson's birthday party during a blizzard!
Description:This is really a neat lesson/web activity. Your kids will help Grandma Brown travel from Charles City to Iowa City, making important travel decisions along the way. My kids loved this and learned a lot about winter weather travel.

For grades 7-12, I found my younger kids could easily do this lesson at their own learning level, taking in only what they could absorb.

In this lesson plan you will make decisions that may save Grandma Brown’s life. Grandma Brown is traveling to her grandson’s birthday party and must be there by 5 pm. On her travels she encounters terrible winter weather, and must make the decision to continue on or stop. You receive weather data from radio disc jockey Dim Bulb and the weather pad to aid you in that decision.

Your homeschooler will read (in the perspective of Grandma Brown) about her travels. She starts at 1 pm and continues throughout the day. At the end of each entry is a link to Dim Bulbs radio cast. Dim will tell you, in that crazy disk jockey way, the weather advisories. Links are provided to the glossary for words and terms that may be unknown.

After Dim’s update, a status report is given showing how many miles left for travel, gas left and the conditions out your “window”. You are then given the chance to check the weather pad. The weather pad will give you important information including current weather and road conditions and what to expect further into your journey. You are given the opportunity to continue or quit on each page.

This is very interactive and keeps you on your toes. It will help you and your homeschooler better understand the importance of decision making during inclement weather. Grandma Brown is counting on YOU!

A teachers guide with objectives, a winter weather glossary and winter weather safety rules are also included with this lesson.
