| In this lesson, students will examine Senegalese sayings and proverbs, and compare them to American sayings. |
"Senegalese proverbs have an important social function: they transmit codes of conduct for individuals and group. Referred to as frequently in individual conversation as they are in public speeches, proverbs reflect common knowledge and popular experience. Great care must be taken in translating proverbs from one language to another as the meaning of the proverb greatly depends on its context and on the way of life of the people who use it. Students will compare American proverbs and sayings to Senegalese proverbs and sayings and discuss the values behind the proverbs."
