| A wonderful reading program that mirrors the Iditarod race in Alaska! |
Idita-read! What a great idea! Not a lesson plan but definitely a useful tool in helping get your kiddos excited about reading.
This is a fantastic idea to excite your kids about reading using the Iditarod as a basis. This program started earlier in February and is almost over but introducing it now can still benefit your kids, though reading the 1112 minutes might be hard. Breaking it down it equals a little more than 18 1/2 hoursÂ…doable if your kids read like my kids do.
This site includes a downloadable "mushing kit" that includes bookmarks; trail maps, tracking charts, book reviews and more. There are also links explaining Iditarod history, mushing terminology, unit studies and lesson plans.
The mushing kit is free to download, as are the links to various Idiatrod sites. But, if you want to access the online activities, you need to subscribe to the program. For homeschool families the cost is $30 or individual student cost is $20. They are still accepting subscriptions.
If you intend to study the Iditarod in the future this would be a great way to introduce the race to the kids, get them excited about upcoming races and give you time to prepare for next year. Make sure to bookmark this site so you can start at the beginning next time! |
