Summary:Make a physical map of your state that is EDIBLE!
Description:Is there a better way to learn the physical terrain of your state or country than to use your left over Valentine candy to make an edible map? In this messy and fun lesson plan you and your homeschoolers will make edible dough with the recipe included. It states the recipe is enough for 25 small maps, but you can be the judge of how big or small you want the maps to be. To change the amounts of the ingredients to suit your needs use a recipe converter. *

After researching the terrain of the selected area your homeschooler will have a great time molding this dough into the geographical location of choice. After the state/region/country** has been molded they will use frosting and candies to create the landmarks seen on physical maps. What child wouldn’t like to make a mountain from a kiss?

My kids are in the process of making an edible map right now of the lake we camp at during the summer. It has many hills, trees, paths and streams. While molding the dough they indented for the lake, mounded the dough for the hills by molding the dough over tin foil balls. They are using blue Jell-O for the lake, black licorice for the roads, red shoestring licorice for the paths, Road Kill gummies for the animals. As you see, the possibilities are endless with active imaginations and learning minds. In between work periods the map is kept covered in the refrigerator and we have had no problems with it.

When your homeschooler is finished he will have learned a great deal about map making, physical land and have quite a piece of art! Have fun!
