| Tidepool Science |
| Sense of Wonder Site |
| This delightful and education-packed science website for families was created by homeschoolers |
Here's the story:
Wendy Figone, a homeschooling mom in the San Francisco Bay Area, was so inspired by Rachel Carson's book, "Sense of Wonder," that she took classes to be trained as a tidepooling docent. Now she is leading homeschooling families on explorations to local tidepools and planning exciting events to nurture that all-important sense of wonder in our youth. In conjunction with these activities, she came up with the idea of creating a website to share this joy of discovery with others and expand the learning opportunities for everyone.
There is a lot that can be learned from tidepools. Just take a look at what this website contains:
*About Us - See the book that inspired this website
*Links - Place your mouse over each screenshot to get a brief description of the external link. You'll find:
--Great tidepooling destinations
--Book recommendations
--Help with critter identification
--Print and do activity
--And even a FREE ONLINE BIOLOGY TEXTBOOK FOR KIDS!
*Books - Click on one of the books to open up a subsection of recommended reading. There are three sections:
--Sand Sculptures
--Tidepooling books for older readers
--Tidepooling books for younger readers
*Games - Find links to many external games related to tidepool science. Learn while you play.
--Explore four virtual tidepools.
--Learn about ecosystems by playing Battleships and Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
--Practice animal classification and identification.
--and more!
*Videos - Click on anything menu item at the top to see related videos. Many of these were embedded from YouTube; a few are from other sources. Here you'll see a sand dollar moving around on the beach, a sea urchin eating a cookie, a hermit crab switching shells under water, a demonstration of octopus intelligence, humorous sea star acrobatics, a breathtaking jellyfish performance, and even a pair of teenage boys crooning a heartfelt ballad about two food chains. And don't miss those *adorable* baby harbor seals!
*Events - See what local site visitors have been up to lately. If you can make it to the San Francisco Bay Area, you can sign up for an upcoming field trip. For example, Wendy has arranged special pricing and access to the Maker Faire, May 2-4 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds; if there's any possibility that you can attend, you will want to be sure to sign up right away.
*Forum - If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, join the forum to share experiences, post local events of interest, and upload photos.
*Tidepooling Tips - If you do decide to go tidepooling, here you will find a few tips that will maximize everyone's enjoyment.
Full Disclosure: Okay, the secret is out. MaryAnna Cashmore helped pull together many of the resources and wrote the code for this website. It has been in development now for over a month. Although there will be more improvements in the near future, we are very excited to announce that the site is ready for you and your family to start enjoying today. Have fun! :) |
