The American Wind Power Center -- 1701 Canyon Lake Drive, Lubbock, TX The American Wind Power Center is the most comprehensive collection of historic windmills in the world. It will be a site long remembered and is a way of honoring those early settlers who struggled with difficult conditions tempered with the life-giving water pumped by windmills. The windmill gave railroads access to underground water, permitted ranchers to fence and selectively breed cattle and farmers to live on land where there were no rivers, streams, or lakes. This history can now be told in a permanent facility dedicated to the preservation of the American-style windmill.

Amon Carter Museum of Western Art -- 3501 Camp Bowie Boulevard , Fort Worth, TX Come see a stunning survey of American art, from the first landscape painters of the 1830s to modern artists of the twentieth century. More than 700 works of American art are on display in the Carter’s galleries at any given time. While the museum hosts traveling exhibitions each year, a majority of the paintings, photographs, prints, and sculpture on view are drawn from the Carter’s comprehensive collection of American art that explores the American experience from the 1820s up to the present day.

Annie Riggs Memorial Museum -- 301 S. Main Street, Fort Stockton, TX Peruse through a typical guest room of the western days. The cast iron bed was a $6.75 bargain from Sears & Roebuck circa 1900. One guest room is furnished much as it was during the hotel's heyday. The Archeology Room exhibits the tusks of a Columbian mammoth, and related artifacts found at a site eight miles from town. The Butz Room features a Wells Fargo strong box made of cast iron and the safe from Koehler's Store with its hidden keyhole.
Discover a variety of other rooms featuring the cowboy era with saddles, bits and spurs, pioneer women and their clothing. Visitors learn of geologic formations and why and where we have oil and gas. The Temporary Exhibit Room has displays that change periodically as well as an excellent mural of Pecos County history by artist Stylle Reed, and an opportunity to view a video of local history.

Ashton Villa -- 2328 Broadway, Galveston, TX Develop a sense of Victorian life and the escapades of the owners of Ashton Villa! Ashton Villa was built in 1858-59, the first of Galveston’s Broadway “palaces,” as well as the first brick house to be built in Texas. The artistic and eccentric Miss Bettie Brown was mistress of the manor, and her life-size paintings still adorn the showy Gold Room. When the villa was almost razed in 1970, the Galveston Historical Foundation formed to save the venerable estate. Grounds include the Heritage Visitors Center with a gift shop and information center.

Barnard's Mill Art Museum -- 307 SW Barnard Street, Glen Rose, TX Journey through art at this museum featuring 12 rooms filled with over 200 original works of art including oils paintings, etchings, artifacts, watercolors, and bronzes. The native limestone flour and grist mill built by Barnard in 1860 still stands on the banks of the Paluxy River just west of the town square. Barnard's Mill was the first building at the site that is now Glen Rose, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Blue Bell Creamery -- 1101 South Blue Bell Road, Brenham, TX Tour the creamery and see how Blue Bell makes its delicious ice cream. You'll get a serving of ice cream, too. On the tour you'll see the creamery from the inside out. You'll learn about the process of making ice cream and the history of the Blue Bell Company. Brookshire's Wildlife Museum & Country Store -- Old Jacksonville Hwy, Tyler, TX The Museum houses more than 450 mammals, fowl, reptiles and aquatic species (stuffed of course). There is also an old timey General Store set up that you can walk around in, look and touch. Outside they have a wonderful fenced off park area with a caboose, fire engine and many other pieces of equipment for the kids to enjoy.

Brownsville Historical Association -- 1325 East Washington Street, Brownsville, TX The Brownsville Historical Association was founded in 1947, and is one of Brownsville's oldest non-profit organizations that examines and preserves history, heritage and cultural arts.
The Brownsville Historical Association operates the Brownsville Heritage Complex which consists of the Stillman House Museum, Brownsville Heritage Museum, The Aiken Education Center, The Heritage Resource Center, and The Children's Cultural and Learning Center. The Association opened the Old City Cemetery Center in October 2007. |

The Buddy Holly Gallery features a permanent exhibition on the life and music of Buddy Holly. Included in the display are Buddy Holly's Fender Stratocaster; a songbook used by Holly and the Crickets, clothing, photographs, recording contracts, tour itineraries, Holly's glasses, homework assignments, report cards, and much more. The Gorge was created, or "cut" when floodwaters escaped over the Spillway at Canyon Lake during the Flood Event of 2002. You will see dinosaur footprints, millions of fossils, and learned about the different types of rock layers and formations. |
Capitol Visitors Center -- 112 East 11th Street, Austin, TX The Capitol Visitors Center is located on the southeast corner of the grounds of the Texas Capitol. It is housed in the restored 1856-57 General Land Office building. The three-story castle-like structure reflects the mid-19th century mock-medieval revival architectural style and is the oldest state office building in Texas. The Visitors Center features exhibits and videos on the Capitol and Texas history as well as travel information and a gift shop.

Dallas Heritage Village -- 1515 South Harwood Street, Dallas, TX With a living history museum the visitor talks with a costumed character of the past who is speaking in the vernacular of the day. Often the visitor interacts not only with the interpreter but also his surroundings. For example, a visitor to the 1861 Farmstead at Dallas Heritage Village will be greeted by “Mrs. Kennedy,” and can sit in her parlor, play checkers, help her with chores and talk with her about the Civil War, her gardens, animals, etc. Living history tends to be multi-sensory, providing sights, sounds, smells and textures.
The costumed interpreters you will encounter portray fictional characters based on the social demographics of North Texas during the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. These composite characters are developed to represent the complex social, political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds of many of the area’s residents.
Remember that for the First Person Interpreters it is always today’s day and month, but always their year in the past. They have no knowledge of anything more recent than their year. Careful questioning can help you learn about our history and daily life in the past!

The Exotic Resort Zoo -- 235 Zoo Trail, Johnson City, TX A one of a kind preserve where several endangered species of animals have a chance to increase their numbers and at the same time allowing people to enjoy their beauty and company. Located on 137 wooded acres with several small lakes and creeks for the enjoyment of animals from around the world to breed and raise their young in a natural habitat.
More than 1/2 of the wild animals in the park at one time or another were listed on the endangered animal lists and nearing extinction. There are over 500 animals, 80 different species, most of them roaming free on 137 acres. They tour you and your children through the 137 acre Wildlife Park on their 4 trams.
Each child and sponsor will receive a cup of feed to feed the 100's of animals in the park. This allows everyone to have an experience to interact and touch the over 80 different species of wild animals. As the animals approach the trams the tour guild will educate the children and adults about each of the animals from where they are from, their endangered status and unique habits. Many have their own personal names.
After returning from the 45 minute to 1 hour tour through the park, each will have the opportunity to pet the many animals in the 2 petting zoo areas. |

Liendo Plantation -- 38653 Wyatt Chapel Rd., Hempstead, TX Liendo Plantation was built in 1853. Originally a Spanish land grant of 67,000 acres and one of Texas' earliest cotton plantations, Liendo was the social center of Texas receiving and lavishly entertaining early Texas dignitaries and notorieties. It was also the home of world-renowned sculptor Elizabet Ney. During the War Between the States, Liendo hosted Cavalry and Infantry Training Camps, an Internment Camp, and a Hospital. Nature Discovery Center -- 7112 Newcastle, Bellaire, TX The Nature Discovery Center was established by the Friends of Bellaire Parks (now Nature Discovery Center, Inc.), a nonprofit organization founded in 1979. The organization raised funds for the purchase of a million dollar 4-acre estate, now Russ Pitman Park. With the help of many volunteers and over 300 in-kind donations, the Friends developed the park, renovated the historic Henshaw House in the park, and gave both to the City of Bellaire. The Nature Discovery Center has been in operation since 1988 in the Henshaw House.
The Nature Discovery Center has become a valuable resource to the community, providing education to families about science and nature. The Center's staff and volunteers offer programs seven days a week. Through classes, exhibits, outreach programs, and field trips, the Nature Discovery Center reaches more than 35,000 people a year from all over Houston and the surrounding areas. The Center's unique programs provide enriching learning experiences which stimulate interest in nature and science. Neill-Cochran House Museum -- 2310 San Gabriel, Austin, TX Feel the Past. Come experience the history and sense what life was like in the early days of Austin and the Republic of Texas. Step into the Neill-Cochran House, which is one of Austin's oldest and most treasured landmarks. Noaa Sea Turtle Hatchery -- 4700 Avenue U, Galveston, TX The Galveston laboratory is located on the site of the Historic Fort Crockett, one block from the Gulf of Mexico on Galveston Island, Texas, and is the only federal fisheries laboratory west of the Mississippi River on the gulf. A high quality seawater system delivers as much as 50,000 gallons daily and supplies large tanks, aquaria and raceways for experiments on estuarine and marine organisms; this is the largest and most extensive federally operated sea water system in the southeastern United States.
The most endangered species of sea turtle in the world is the Kemp's Ridley which is also the most common species found in the waters off of Texas. Since the Kemp's Ridley was listed on the Endangered Species Act, the Galveston Lab has played an important role in the conservation and recovery of this species through ongoing research, head-starting experiments and support of international conservation efforts. |

O. Henry Museum -- 409 East 5th Street, Austin, TX Look into the life of William Sidney Porter, the man who became famous under the pen name O. Henry. Known as "the master of the short story," Porter lived in this 1886 Queen Anne-style cottage from 1893 to 1895. His home has since been restored and now contains artifacts and memorabilia from his life in Austin. His experiences as journalist, draftsman, bank teller, and with the Texas Rangers are reflected in his short stories. Memorabilia from the author's life in Austin furnish this National Literary Landmark.
The O. Henry Museum offers writing programs for adults and children. During the school year, the museum offers creative writing workshops as after school programs, to Austin middle school students. |
Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum -- Pier 19, Galveston, TX Visitors can board the retired jackup drilling rig and view a video about the offshore industry. The museum features three floors of models and interactive displays illustrating the story of offshore oil and gas from seismic technology to exploration and production. Scale models of production platforms, actual drill bits and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) as well as videos and exhibits explain drilling, geology, seismic, well servicing and production.
Following a leisurely tour inside the museum, visitors can take the skywalk out onto the drill floor of the rig, or visit the exhibits on the pipe deck from the first floor of the museum.

The Oscar E. Monnig Meteorite Collection was donated to Texas Christian University (TCU) over a period of 8 years, from 1978 to 1986. Prior to its transfer, the entire collection was cataloged by Mr. Glenn Huss of the American Meteorite Laboratory, Denver, Colorado. The current curator is Dr. Arthur J. Ehlmann, Emeritus Professor of Geology. The collection now contains over 1,450 different meteorites.
When Oscar Monnig died in 1999, a considerable amount of money was given to the Geology Department at TCU from his estate with the purpose of maintaining the collection. On Saturday, February 1, 2003, the Oscar Monnig Meteorite Gallery was opened for the public. With about 10% of the best meteorites in the collection on display, this is a world class facility. The gallery is located in the Sid Richardson Science Building on the campus of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Built in the High Victorian Italianate style, the frame house, plus book house, and stable, were a progressive addition to the city's architecture and a proper home for the ex-Confederate general and later United States Senator. |
Sam Houston Memorial Museum -- 1402 19th St, Huntsville, TX Dedicated to the life & times of General Sam Houston, former Governor of Tennessee, victor over Santa Anna in the Texas War of Independence, first President of the Republic of Texas, Senator from the State of Texas and Governor of the State of Texas.
In the springtime the museum offers tours for large school groups. Spring tours consist of a short video about Sam Houston, guided visits to each historic building, the Memorial Museum, and demonstrations such as hearth cooking, black powder, historic toys, blacksmithing, medicine, phrenology, and spinning. Sam Rayburn House Museum -- 890 West State Highway 56, Bonham, TX Sam Rayburn, one of the most powerful and influential politicians of the 20th century, was in his second of 24 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives when he built a two-story home in 1916 on a 125-acre farm just west of Bonham. The modest 12-room home cost $2,800 to build.
The Sam Rayburn House was donated to the Texas Historical Commission by the Sam Rayburn Foundation in 1972. Restored with the help of a $96,500 state appropriation, the site, with its exhibits of Rayburn family items, represents the lifestyle of Mr. Sam.

Sam Rayburn Library and Museum -- 800 West Sam Rayburn Drive, Bonham, TX Learn about the man who served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives longer than any other person: Sam Taliaferro Rayburn (1882-1961). Known affectionately as "Mr. Sam" by his friends and colleagues, Rayburn established the library and museum in 1957 as a tribute to the people of his cherished Fannin County. The Museum contains exhibits on Sam Rayburn's life and career and features an exact replica of the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives during Rayburn's tenure in that position. The Rayburn Library and Museum also houses Rayburn's personal library and an extensive collection of books that relate to his career or to the people, issues, and events with which he dealt during his years of public service.

Samuel May Williams Home -- 3601 Avenue P, Galveston, TX Samuel May Williams, Founder of the Texas Navy and secretary to Stephen F. Austin, teamed up with Michel Menard to lay plans for a new city; Williams’s house,built in 1839 is second oldest in the city he created, second only to Menard’s. This unpretentious Creole planter’s-style house includes a romantic rooftop cupola (restored after being destroyed by fire in the 1890s). The first floor was buried during the grade raising after the 1900 storm.

San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts -- One Love Street, San Angelo, TX The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts has three galleries - two with dramatic 40-foot ceilings and a multi-purpose meeting room that can accommodate up to 300 people. Spindletop- Gladys City Boomtown Museum -- Highway 69 at University Drive, Beaumont, TX A reconstructed oil boomtown reminiscent of the one that appeared overnight following the discovery of the Spindletop Oil Fields in 1901, this site is a National Historic Landmark and features a 58 foot granite monument to the Lucas Gusher.
In the years since its dedication in 1976, over one-half million people have visited Gladys City. The museum provides many services to the public, including school tours, adult group tours, teachers' workshops, and historical information for researchers, journalists, and the general public. Gladys City serves as a historical clearinghouse by maintaining files of business papers, maps, pertinent news items, and photos relating to the history of the Spindletop oil field and Southeast Texas. |
Square House Museum -- 5th and Elsie , Panhandle, TX The historic Square House, built of lumber hauled from Dodge City in the 1880's, is just one of 21 buildings, galleries, outdoor diorama, and large outdoor artifacts that make up the Square House Museum complex. Case exhibits and full-sized diorama tell the story of the Texas Panhandle and its people, from mammoth hunters 12,000 years ago, through the Indian Wars, cattle ranches, and the coming of the railroad in the 19th century, to the oil boom of the 1920's and the region's part in the space program of today. A wildlife gallery and two art galleries add other dimensions to the history. Accredited three times by the American Association of Museums, the Square House Museum is considered one of the best small museums in the United States.

Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts -- The University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, TX Presenting exhibitions of contemporary art of national and international caliber, encouraging serious but adventuresome learning through visual art and creating opportunities for student involvement in the planning and execution of exhibitions - the Rubin Center does it all. Three distinct gallery spaces include the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Gallery, a 1,900 square feet designed for larger-scale artwork and sculpture, the L-Gallery, designed for more intimate framed art and smaller pieces, and the Project Space, reserved primarily for advanced UTEP art students and El Paso-based artists that are either launching their careers or establishing a new direction in their work.

Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library -- 211 S. Lanana, Nacogdoches, TX Gain a knowledge of and an appreciation for Nacogdoches history by visiting the Sterne-Hoya House Museum. The house was constructed in 1830 before Texas was a Republic and was home to a prominent merchant and Texas Revolutionary leader. Texas Military Forces Museum -- Camp Mabry 2200 W. 35th St Bldg 6 , Austin, TX The museum focuses on the history of Texas military forces from 1835 to the present using both inside and outdoor exhibits. The building dates to 1918 and once housed a mess hall for camp troops. There are exhibits of jet aircraft, helicopters and artillery pieces located around the parade field. Texas State Cemetery -- 909 Navasota, Austin, TX Walking through the Texas State Cemetery is like reading a history of Texas. Almost every aspect of Texas' past is represented on the picturesque 18 acres in East Austin. Notables, such as Stephen F. Austin, "Bigfoot" Wallace, John Connally, Barbara Jordan, and Bob Bullock, along with hundreds of Confederate veterans, lend their personal stories that together make up Texas' history. |
Texas State Railroad -- P.O. BOX 39, Rusk, TX Since 1896, trains have rolled along the Texas State Railroad (TSRR), passing through the beautiful pineywoods and rolling hardwood creek bottoms of East Texas. Today, the historic state railroad is still maintained as a fully self-contained railroad system. Its train crews maintain and operate 4 steam engines, 4 antique diesel locomotives, and a complete steam engine restoration shop; while its track crew maintains over 25 miles of track and 24 bridges.
Passengers may board the historic trains at either Rusk or Palestine. Both ends of the line have turn-of-the-century style train stations. The trip takes 1 1/2 hours to reach the opposite station. Once visitors have arrived, they have an hour to enjoy lunch, browse through the park's train store, ride paddle boats, or take a short nature hike. Passengers then reboard for the return trip home. The State Park's 50-mile, round-trip steam engine excursions take 4 hours.

Trinity River Audubon Center -- 6500 S. Loop 12, Dallas, TX The Trinity River Audubon Center -- your gateway to explore the amazing resources of the 6,000-acre Great Trinity Forest. As the largest urban hardwood forest in the United States, this forest supports a diverse community of plant and animal species and contains a unique mixture of bottomland hardwoods, wetlands and grasslands.
The Trinity River Audubon Center, located eight minutes from downtown Dallas on 120 acres, opened October 2008 and is part of the City of Dallas-Trinity River Corridor Project. The land, formerly an illegal dump site, has been reclaimed by the City of Dallas and beautifully demonstrates how a municipal liability can be transformed into a major asset for people of all ages to enjoy. The Museum is housed today in an award-winning structure nestled on a tree-shaded site, adjacent to the campus of Tyler Junior College. The building contains two major exhibition galleries on the ground floor and a smaller gallery on the upper level for focus exhibitions. There is also a library, calssroom, café, and gift shop.
The Tyler Museum of Art's growing permanent collection features over 600 works including paintings, prints, photographs, and sculpture by artists such as James Surls, Vernon Fisher, Alexander Calder, Terry Allen, and Charles Umlauf.

USS Lexington - Museum on the Bay -- 2914 N Shoreline Blvd, Corpus Christi, TX Come aboard "The Blue Ghost", a true living legend, for the most educational, exciting and entertaining time you'll ever have. Commissioned in 1943, LEXINGTON served longer and set more records than any carrier in U.S. Naval history. Decommissioned in 1991, the 910-foot, 16-deck, 33,000-ton aircraft carrier now serves as an important historical repository and museum. Because of the historical significance of the USS LEXINGTON, the ship is maintained as a tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and as a memorial to the people who died serving the US, in the defense of freedom, especially in World War II. Displays, ceremonies, and other programs emphasize the heroism and sacrifice of those who have served the nation in the Navy and the Marine Corps. Historical reenactments vividly portray the service of the people who fought in World War II. |

Winedale -- 3738 FM 2714, Round Top, TX The heart of Winedale is its historic buildings, each structure offering a tangible link to our past through its architecture and furnishings and the histories of its buildings, owners, and occupants. Winedale regularly hosts students from elementary and secondary schools as well as college and university classes in history, anthropology, horticulture, and theater. Additionally Winedale reaches out to the larger community through its public programs and continuing education seminars. Winedale sponsors public programs and events throughout the year, and its dining hall, dormitory, modern conference center, and outdoor pavilion are available for use by nonprofit educational groups for meetings and retreats. Winedale's Interpretive Center, located in the historic Hazel's Lone Oak Cottage, contains exhibits that acquaint visitors with the history and development of the Winedale property and historic structures, and that introduces them to Winedale programs and points of interest. |
