| Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park |
Prairie Grove was the site of one of the largest Civil War Battles in Arkansas. The park includes a museum, gift shop, guided tours of the Morrow and Latta houses. This is more than just a military site. The park tries to convey what it was like for families during the battle and during the war. Walking the Battlefield Trail takes about an hour. This is a numbered trail and there is a pamphlet available in the Visitor's Center. For those into geocaching, there is a geocache tour of the park. A self guided driving tour of important civil war sites takes you in and out of the park. A free pamphlet is available at the Visitor's Center. A CD or cassette tape can be purchased for a nominal amount if a narrated guide to the driving tour is desired.
Homeschool groups are welcome. Homeschoolers get the group rate of $2.00 per person. A group tour includes a visit to the museum, a 14 minute educational video, a guided tour of the Morrow and Latta Houses. The entire program takes 1-1/2 hours. The picnic area and playground are available to groups before and after the tour. |
