Facility:Portland Observatory
Description:Designated a National Historic Landmark, the Observatory is the only remaining maritime signal tower in the country. Sea captain-turned-entrepreneur Lemuel Moody built the tower in 1807 to signal the arrival of ships into the harbor through the use of specialized flags. Climb the 103 steps to the top while learning about Portland's maritime history, historic preservation, and the story behind this unique structure.
