You must be a high school student graduating between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.
You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
You must register as a full-time student for the Festival.
You must submit a video or DVD for consideration in each category. You may audition in both Acting and Musical Theater, but each category entry has different length requirements and must be made with a separate video or DVD.
All materials (workshop registration form and audition recording) must arrive in the same package and be postmarked before June 1, 2008.
Preliminary judging will narrow the field to the top performances in each category. These finalists will be announced Tuesday, June 17 and will compete Saturday evening, June 21, during the Scholarship and Awards Performance.
Guidelines For Making Your Recording
Your recording must be unedited, show a full-length image of the participant and be in front of a neutral background. No changes in lighting during the performance are allowed.
If you have a recording used for another competition with similar guidelines, such as the NFAA/ARTS program, you may use that video or DVD. Recordings of live or group performances are not acceptable.
Time limits: Only the required length of each performance will be judged. Any material after that will be disregarded. Pauses between selections do not count toward your total time limit.
The material to be judged should appear at the beginning of the recording.
Judging is done on the overall performance, not the quality of the recording; but be sure the judges can see and hear your performance clearly.
Acting Category Requirements
Material: Please submit one recording with two different 2-minute performances of contrasting monologues of your choice. These can be anything that showcases your talents, as long as you show definite differences in characterization. We want to see versatility in your talent. Select material appropriate for your age. No original material will be accepted. Sound: No live or recorded sound effects may be used. Props: Props are limited to one stool and two chairs. Hand props are not allowed. Camera: You must show a full-length image of the participant and be in front of a neutral background.
Judging Criteria:
Applicants will be judged on their ability to demonstrate concentration, control of material; and flexibility and versatility of voice, movement, and expression. Vocal and physical phrasing, and vocal and physical articulation must also be demonstrated. Actors should give evidence of knowing the meaning and place of each audition piece in the context of the piece from which it was taken. Actors should demonstrate a grasp of the event being dramatized and deliver it to the audience. The performance should be believable and make the audience care about what is taking place.
Musical Theater Requirements
Material: Please submit one 4-minute recorded performance from a single musical. The selection should be a few lines of dialogue leading into a song that includes movement. Sound: Live or recorded accompaniment may be used. Camera: You must show a full-length image of the participant in front of a neutral background.
Judging Criteria:
Applicants will be judged on their ability to demonstrate concentration; control of material; and flexibility and versatility of voice, movement and expression. Actors should give evidence of knowing the meaning and place of each audition piece in the context of the musical from which it is taken. Equal emphasis will be placed on acting, vocal proficiency and movement.
