Gallaudet University, Clerc Center, and the Deaflympics Organizing Committee Team Up to Sponsor Contest for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
Every year, Gallaudet University and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center sponsor writing and art contests for deaf and hard of hearing students. This year, Gallaudet University is teaming up with the Deaflympics Organizing Committee to offer an expanded contest with special prizes.
In addition to the scholarships for essay contest winners, top winners in every contest category will receive tickets to the 16th Winter Deaflympics. Are you interested? Read on! And hurry! The contest deadline is October 31.
ThemeGoing for the Gold
Athletes come to the Winter Deaflympics for one purpose: They want to win. Whether they are skiers, skaters, or snowboarders, the athletes focus on being the bestand the best of the best is the first place winner. Gold, the symbol of wealth, power, and beauty, is the color of the first place medal. Every athlete wants to win a gold medal. Whether an athlete competes in the Deaflympics, the Olympics, or a game on the neighborhood basketball court, he or she wants to finish first and win the gold.Going for the gold means striving for excellence.

Prizes
First, second, and third place winners in the art category will receive tickets to the 2007 Winter Deaflympics for themselves and an accompanying adult.

Place winners in the essay contest only will receive scholarship money for college.
- $1,000 first place
- $500 second place
- $300 third place
- $100 two honorable mentions
All scholarship awards will be DOUBLED for winners who choose to attend Gallaudet University. (They may be more than doubled depending on other information provided by the applying student.)

Rules for Essay, Art, and Sign Contest
- Entrants must be deaf or hard of hearing; hearing loss must be bilateral; hearing loss must be verifiable.
- Entries must be postmarked or in our office by October 31.
- Entries must be delivered personally or sent through the U.S. mail.
- Entries must be accompanied by an entry form.
- One copy of entrants photograph is requested.
- Entrants may submit multiple entries, but they may only earn one award.
- Late entries will be RETURNED. We hate doing this, but we feel it is only fair to the other contestants.
- All entries become the property of Gallaudet University; they may be published in any format.
- Our judges decision is final.
Rules for Art Entries
- Entrants must be no older than 19 years old.
- Entries may be acrylic, pastel, watercolor, oil, cut and paste, crayon, and/or pen and ink.
- Entries must be no bigger than 8½ x11 in size.
Rules for Signed Presentation Entries
- Entrants may be no older than 19 years old.
- Essays may be placed on a CD and encoded in the following formats :
Quicktime (.mov), WindowsMedia Video (.wmv), or Real Media (.rm).
- Essays may also be submitted on Mini-DV videotape.
- Essays must be at least 2 minutes and not exceed 3 minutes.
