Description:2008 College Scholarship

About 2-5 AWIS College Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors each year, including the Helen Davies Award. In addition, Citations of Merit ($300) and Recognition Awards ($100) may be given.
Who may apply?

In general, female students who are high school seniors and plan to study science in the next academic year may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who plan to attend a college or university in the United States. Applicants must have a 3.75 high school grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and an math plus verbal SAT score of at least 1200 or an ACT composite score of 25. Eligible fields include the behavioral, life, and physical sciences and engineering. See the detailed list in the application instructions to confirm eligibility of your field. Applicants must plan a career in research and/or teaching. Eligibility criteria are subject to change.

Evaluation Criteria

Reviewers consider academic achievement, experience in research and commitment to a career in research or teaching, overcoming economic, social, or other barriers, and involvement in community activities. The program is quite competitive, with about 100 applicants last year. Most awardees had a GPA close to 4.0 and SAT scores of at least 1400 (on a 1600 scale).

How may the award be used?

The award may be used for any aspect of undergraduate education, including tuition, books, housing, and travel, for example.

Application Deadline and Forms

The 2008 college scholarship application forms may be obtained via the links below. You must use these forms. The application includes a summary form, an essay describing research experience, scientific interests, and career aspirations, two recommendation letters from science teachers or research advisers, a high school transcript, and reports of standardized test scores if available.

The deadline for receipt by AWIS of completed undergraduate applications is January 17, 2008. See the application instructions for the mailing address.
