The global and economic future of our children and grandchildren is at stake.

Technology, especially the Internet, is accelerating the pace of globalization and the growth of foreign businesses across all industries. China, India, Korea and other countries are quickly emerging as leaders in design, engineering, manufacturing, services, and innovation.
Why Global Challenge?
Many in the US consider globalization and foreign competition to be a threat, as American companies start to anticipate, prepare for, and react to increased competition by changing their traditional ways of operating. Adjusting to this new dynamic is challenging for the citizens and workers of developing countries as well as developed countries.

But we believe that the changing global landscape creates an opportunity for all nations to strengthen and expand global understanding and cooperation and to solve the world’s most intractable problems, including global climate change, poverty, and disease. Through The Global Challenge, students begin to think more about these problems with applied math and science skills before they graduate from high school.

We can turn the "problem” of global competition into an opportunity if we develop a global perspective and respond with the energy and creativity needed for leadership in innovation.

The Challenge: Save the World on Your Way to College!
The Global Challenge is an online international competition that encourages learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. If you are in high school, then we invite you to register, study, produce work and reap the rewards, including merit scholarships! 60% of our students are girls and young women, and 75% of all students are minorities, who are interested in making international friends and solving global problems.

Who Can Join the Global Challenge?
All students who are in high school (or the equivalent age which is usually 14-17 years old) are invited to participate. The official language of the program is English and you must be able to write and converse in English. The work for the different projects is performed in teams of four students. Global teams are comprised of two students from one country and two from another country. Our website facilitates the matching of students into teams so students can join individually or with a friend they want to work with.

Registration is open year around. The program's main activities run from September to April and from June to September each year. Solutions are judged each May and October and awards are made in June and November.

What Competitions make up the Global Challenge?
There are several team competitions that are part of the Global Challenge Award Program. Each competition has its own set of rules and a score card that helps guide your team to a winning solution. Our offerings reflect the diverse interests and time availability of our students and we know you'll be able to find just the right fit for you. All competitions are team-based so no matter which one you choose, you'll get to make friends with students from around the world! Take a look...

Awards
We award all students who make a good effort! Awards given to all students upon request include letters of recommendation, certificates of participation and certificates of accomplishment. Other awards vary, and typically include sponsorship to courses, organizational membership, opportunities for study or engagement in science, technology engineering and mathematics, prizes, discounts on "green goods", cash, and travel support (or some combination) to all members of selected winning teams.

1. Awards are given to individual team members on winning teams in each competition.
2. Each competition will be judged using its own specific rubric.
3. Judging and the announcement of winners will take place twice each year. For April 30 submissions, judging in May and winners announced in early June. For October 30 submissions, judging in November and winners announced in early December.

Sponsor's Goals:Established in 2005 in partnership with the University of Vermont College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, The Global Challenge engages parents, teachers, students and the community in a high-impact educational experience that teaches about complex systems and global engineering challenges while enhancing K12 education and strengthening the pipeline of students entering science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Recently funded by the ITEST program of the National Science Foundation, the program leverages existing online resources and networks and works collaboratively with other programs, such as UVM's Design TASC and the Engineering Summer Institute.

We hope you take some time to learn about the project and find a way to participate, contribute, and help extend the goals of the Global Challenge.
