Who gets recognized in The Awards?

Approximately 30,000 young artists and writers from across the United States receive recognition on the regional level of The Awards. The most outstanding works of art and writing from each of the Regional Affiliate programs—Gold Keys—are forwarded to New York City to be assessed on a national level. To give you an idea of how many qualify for national level review, panels of professional jurors reviewed more than 6,165 works of art and 1,268 manuscripts to select the 1,160 national award recipients in 2007. Graduating seniors who submit a body of work in the Portfolio Categories—art, photography, general writing or nonfiction—compete for local and national scholarships bestowed by the Regional Affiliate programs, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and a network of arts institutes, colleges and universities.

If Your Work is Recognized on a Regional or National Level

On the regional level, award recipients are recognized with lapel pins and certificates. In areas where there is an affiliate program, award recipients are celebrated through local award ceremonies, exhibitions and readings. Regional recognition includes Gold and Silver Key Awards, and in some regions, Honorable Mention Awards. Affiliates also select American Visions & Voices Award Nominees as “Best of Show” for their region. Some affiliates award local scholarships and cash awards. Gold Key Awards become national qualifiers.

On the national level, award recipients are recognized with medals, certificates, and listing in the national catalog and on the Alliance web site. A selection of national award-winning works are included in the national catalog and the annual anthology. Recognition levels include
:
Gold Awards—Most exceptional works in each category.
Silver Awards—High honors in each category.
American Visions & Voices Awards—Single works of art or writing representing each of the Regional Affiliate programs on the national level of The Awards.
Portfolio Gold Awards—Twelve cash grants of $10,000 presented in the names of leadership sponsors of the Alliance to graduating seniors—five artists, two photographers and five writers—for exemplary portfolios.
Portfolio Silver Awards and Notable Achievement Awards—Graduating seniors awarded with outstanding portfolios in art and photography are able to leverage an additional $1.5 million in financial aid through a network of eighty prestigious arts institutes, colleges and universities. As a result of Alliance donors, additional $1,000 Notable Achievement scholarships may become available and presented to Portfolio Silver Award recipients as recommended by jurors on the national level.
Teacher Awards—The teachers of students who receive national awards are also honored. Several cash awards are presented to teachers who mentor the Portfolio Gold Award recipients or submit an outstanding group of student artworks or manuscripts.
