Brown Palace Hotel -- 321 17th St, Denver, CO The Brown Palace Hotel is the second oldest hotel in Denver, but it's main claim to fame is the long list of dignitaries and celebrities who have graced the establishment since its inception. Originally designed in an Italian Renaissance style, complete with an atruim, the hotel was later expanded and features a variety of architectural styles, all completed with a sumptuous air of elegance. According to its website, every president since Theodore Roosevelt has stayed at the hotel over its long history with the exception of Calvin Coolidge. A variety of themed tours are available. |

Also on site is a museum full of Buffalo Bill and Wild West memorabilia and pictures. A traveling collection changes but is usually interesting. Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum -- 215 South Tejon Street, Colorado Springs, CO With a mission to collect, preserve, research, and interpret the history and culture of the Pikes Peak Region, the Museum features permanent exhibits on the history of the area and changing exhibits featuring subjects as diverse as Western art, antique quilts, Plains and Pueblo Indian culture, and space exploration. Popular culture exhibits have included such topics as juke boxes, motorcycles, and baseball memorabilia. Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad -- 479 Main Ave, Durango, CO Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882 (amazingly, only 9 months after construction began) the tracks to Silverton were completed, and the train began hauling both freight and passengers.

Fort Collins Municipal Railway -- Roosevelt and Oak Streets, Fort Collins, CO The Fort Collins Municipal Railway Society (FCMRS) works in partnership with the Fort Collins Museum to operate the Fort Collins Municipal Railway, presenting a living history of electric public transportation in Fort Collins. They preserve, display, operate, and interpret streetcar service, and collect artifacts and information of an educational nature and of significance to the City's electric railway. The 3-mile round trip between City Park and Howes Street (downtown) on Birney Street Car 21 takes about 1/2 hour. You are sure to love this amazing history tour. |

Georgetown Loop Railroad -- P.O. Box 249, Georgetown, CO The Georgetown Loop Railroad was one of Colorado's first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time.
The thriving mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume lie two miles apart in a steep, narrow mountain canyon. To connect them, the railroad's builders designed a corkscrew route that traveled twice the distance, slowly gaining more than 600 feet in elevation. It included horseshoe curves, grades of up to 4%, and four bridges across Clear Creek, including the massive Devil's Gate High Bridge. The Colorado & Southern Railway operated the line for passengers and freight from 1899 to 1938, when it was abandoned.
In 1973, the Colorado Historical Society began restoring the railroad as part of its 978-acre Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park. A replica of the High Bridge was completed in 1984, in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its original construction. |
The Grant-Humphreys Mansion -- 770 Pennsylvania St., Denver, CO Located in Denver's "Quality Hill" neighborhood, this impressive Beaux Arts mansion was built in 1900-1902 and features 42 rooms. Originally the house featured its own bowling alley, but the second owners converted it into a shooting gallery. |
Hamill House -- Corner of Argentine and Third St., Georgetown, CO Construction started on this house in 1867, and it was expanded over the next two decades until it reached its present form. The grounds include a privy (divided in half for family and servants), a carriage house and stable, office and laundry building. The house is interesting for its early use of bay windows and solarium. The house contains the original walnut woodwork, wall and ceiling papers, and four fireplaces. There are lots of other fine Victorians in Georgetown, so be sure to drive or walk around a bit. |

Hiwan Homestead -- 4208 S. Timbervale Drive, Evergreen, CO This 17-room log lodge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its unique construction. Hiwan's restored 1890-1930 era rooms illustrate a comfortable style of early mountain summer home living. As a local history museum, it maintains active craft and interpretive school programs as well as changing exhibitions, which are sponsored by the Jefferson County Historical Society.
The museum's hands-on exhibits are always a favorite of young visitors and the young at heart! Other exhibits feature quilts made by Hiwan's own Busy Bee crafters, special collections and loans from other museums.
Local history programs for school children are presented in the mornings at the museum. Unscheduled visitors may tour the facilities Tuesdays through Sundays, noon to 5:00 p.m. and in the summer from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After-school programs involve children in crafts and activities under the guidance of talented volunteers.
Professionally staffed with Open Space personnel, Hiwan Homestead Museum relies on members of the Jefferson County Historical Society for volunteer programs and exhibit assistance. |

National Center for Atmospheric Research/UCAR -- 1850 Table Mesa Dr., Boulder, CO NCAR's Mesa Lab, located at the west end of Table Mesa Drive in Boulder, Colorado, is a working research laboratory that welcomes the public seven days a week. Admission is free. The building and the adjacent weather trail are both wheelchair-accessible.
The inspiring setting is worth a visit in itself. The site is maintained as a nature preserve. Mule deer, fox, and other wildlife range over the area and adjoining mountain parks.
