Adams built the museum in 1930 as a memorial to his family and to honor the early pioneers that settled the Black Hills. The Adams House, built in 1892, is an elegant Victorian mansion which became the Adams House Museum on July 1, 2000.

The Codington County Heritage Museum is located in the former Carnegie Library building in uptown Watertown, South Dakota. Watertown is in the heart of the historic and scenic Coteau des Prairie and is the seat of Codington County. The museum’s collections include thousands of local history artifacts, 200 linear feet of archival material, and more than 2000 photographs. The museum staff provides group tours, research assistance, programs, workshops, and slide presentations. The museum displays both permanent and temporary exhibits, including a turn of the century Victorian home, a country school, a dry goods and general store, a 1920’s dentist office, and a military display. The home of Gladys Pyle, the first elected woman U.S. senator, is a well preserved example of Queen Anne architecture. John Levis Pyle built this house in 1893-94 for his family. Members of his family have occupied the house continuously to the present day. The home is filled with beautiful oak woodwork and many art glass windows. Upstairs you'll find the room where Bradbury & Bradbury's seashell pattern was reproduced from.

One of the early successful museums located on an Indian reservation, the Heritage Center's fine arts collection includes over two thousand paintings, drawings, and sculptures representing a large number of different Native American tribal traditions. Its tribal arts collection concentrates on traditional Lakota Tribal Arts. The Heritage Center serves as an extremely valuable cultural resource not only for the students of Red Cloud Indian School but for students of the other reservation schools and for all the Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Spirit Mound Station

Schedule a tour to visit and learn about The Spirit Mound Station - an oil-fired peaking station near Vermillion, SD. The plant has two generating units and primarily runs on an as-needed basis when the demand for electricity exceeds the capacity of baseload facilities. That usually occurs during periods of extreme hot or cold temperatures, increased agricultural loads or emergencies. The station, which began commercial operation in 1978, can be remotely operated from the Leland Olds Station near Stanton, ND. It can be brought up to full load within 30 minutes. That is in contrast to coal-based facilities like Leland Olds Station, which take hours. Winter operation capacity is 120 megawatts (MW) and summer operation capacity is 104 MW, for both units. The station uses No. 2 fuel oil, which is stored in containers that hold up to 8 million gallons of fuel. When in use, the station consumes 100 gallons of fuel per minute.
