Barnes Foundation -- 300 North Latch's Lane, Merion Station, PA The Barnes Foundation was established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts." Located in a twelve-acre arboretum, the Foundation is home to one of the world's largest collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings, with extensive holdings by Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne, Renoir and Modigliani, as well as important examples of African sculpture. Compass Inn Museum -- US Route 30, Laughlintown, PA Restored Stagecoach Stop Built In 1799. Visit the Compass Inn to receive an informative and entertaining tour by costumed docents that tells the story of transportation and everyday life in the early 1800's. The tour delivers "history with a smile" by incorporating a generous sprinkling of etymology (word and phrase origins). For example you can learn why we drink in “bars” and “toast” people.
The restored Inn is completely furnished with period pieces. Visitors can tour seven rooms including the common room, serving kitchen, ladies parlor and four bedrooms. Staying in a hotel was very different in 1820 than it is today. You have to see it to appreciate it.
The 1-1/2 hour tour includes the original Inn, and three reconstructed outbuildings: a cookhouse, blacksmith shop and barn, all completely furnished with period pieces. |

Curtin Village -- 3) miles north of Exit 158 off I-80, Milesburg, PA The 1830 Federal style mansion is restored and furnished to look as it did in 1850.
Special events are planned at the Village beginning in Mid-June with the Arts Festival. Ephrata Cloisters -- 632 West Main St., Ephrata, PA One of America's earliest religious communities, the Ephrata Cloister was founded in 1732 by German settlers seeking spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Gathered in unique European style buildings, the community consisted of celibate Brothers and Sisters, and a married congregation of families. At the zenith of the community in the 1740s and 1750s, about 300 members worked and worshiped at the Cloister. Today, the National Historic Landmark is open for tours, special programs, and on-going research opportunities. |

Erie County History Center & Cashier's House -- 419 State Street, Erie, PA The Cashier's House recently underwent extensive restoration, courtesy of the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. Stucco was removed and brick was strengthened, Stucco was replaced and the building was repainted with authentic colors determined by extensive research and study of different paint layers. Some window frames and panes have been replaced.
Interior restoration work has provided a transformation. Warm yellows, cool greens and pineapple tints now greet the visitor, as he or she tours the first floor. Although evidence supports hand-graining all of the interior window trim, due to fiscal realities, one door was selected to provide a sample of this technique which mimics richer toned, more expensive woods. The second and third floors were also restored. Bedrooms on the second floor are open for visitors to view. |

Fort Necessity National Battlefield -- 1 Washington Parkway, Farmington, PA Site of George Washington's first major event in his military career. The Battle of Fort Necessity on July 3, 1754 marked the beginning of the French and Indian War. |
Fort Venago (Machault) -- US 322, Franklin, PA Fort Venango originally named Fort Machault, was located at a strategic spot where French Creek enters the Allegheny River. It was a French fort used as a supply depot for Fort Duquesne. It was also the launching point for raids by mixed parties of French soldiers and Delaware and Shawnee warriors. The French burned down the fort when Fort Niagara fell to the British in 1759. The British then built a post called Fort Venango in 1760. The fort was wiped out during Pontiac's Rebellion in May 1763. There is a marker in Franklin, Pennsylvania. Franklin is a quaint historical town on Washington’s Trail driving route. The Hoge-Osmer House, headquarters of the Society, is also a house museum. It was constructed in 1866 and is named for its original builder, Thomas Hoge, and for its long-time occupants, the Newton Osmer family. The house holds furnishings typical of both families. |

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum -- 8601 Lindbergh Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA This wildlife refuge is administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The freshwater tidal marsh and other habitats have become a resting and feeding area for more than 280 species of birds, including 80 species that nest here. Fox, deer, muskrat, turtles, fish, frogs and a wide variety of wildflowers and plants call the refuge "home." Self-guided field trips are welcome. The Cusano Environmental Education Center is a green building that opened in 2001. they established farms, meetinghouses, schools, and communities. Mercer Museum -- 84 South Pine Street, Doylestown, PA By 1897 handmade objects were being discarded in favor of new machine-made goods. Historian and archaeologist Henry Mercer (1856-1930) recognized the need to collect and preserve the outmoded material of daily life in America before it was swept away by the Industrial Revolution. Mercer gathered almost 30,000 items ranging from hand tools to horse-drawn vehicles and assembled this encyclopedic collection in a system of his own devising. To enhance the collection's educational value, and to share it with the public, Mercer decided to design and build a museum to display the artifacts. |

The "little red schoolhouse" of the Pike County Historical Society is currently located about ½ mile away from The Columns in Apple Valley Village on Route 6. This historic structure, the Schocopee Schoolhouse, was originally constructed in the late 1850’s just "out of town" on Schocopee Road. It served as a one-room school until 1907, when it was replaced by the new, "modern," school in Milford. |

Rachel Carson Homestead -- 613 Marion Avenue, Springdale, PA The Rachel Carson Homestead is the birthplace and early home of scientist and author, Rachel Carson (1907-1964). The 19th century farmhouse is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is located in Springdale, Pennsylvania.
The Homestead is situated in a suburban neighborhood where visitors can tour the four remaining rooms that Rachel Carson shared with her parents, her brother and sister. Standing in her bedroom, you can look through the window as she did and imagine what life was like for her as a young girl in the early 1900s. This was a humble home that had no indoor plumbing and a lean-to kitchen at the back of the house. |

Salt Springs Park -- Silver Creek Rd., Montrose PA, PA Salt Springs State Park is a recreational, educational, and historical center in Susquehanna County and Northeastern Pennsylvania. The park offers a gorge with three magnificent waterfalls surrounded by a virgin hemlock forest and trails winding through 842 acres. At the base of the gorge is a bubbling salt spring, traces of an 1850s woolen mill, and mid-19th century farmhouses and barns. |
Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center -- 105 Seminary Street, Pennsburg, PA The center's collection records the lives of this small German religious group who, in the 1730s, abandoned their homes in Silesia in order to start their lives anew in southeastern Pennsylvania. The center's exhibits and collections document the Schwenkfelder culture from their arrival to the present, and the history of the Perkiomen watershed region. Initiated in the 1880s, the site has become an important resource for genealogical studies, the history of the German Reformation, Pennsylvania German culture, and Schwenkfelder studies. |
Shriver House Museum -- 309 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, PA The home of George Washington Shriver was built in 1860 on what was then considered a double lot on the edge of town. George's intentions were to raise his family here as well as house his business venture "Shrivers' Saloon and Ten Pin Alley". The home was originally built with an adjacent building located steps from the rear of the home and was 16 feet wide by 64 feet long, enough room for two bowling lanes. |
Slate Belt Heritage Center -- 30 North First Street, Bangor, PA Slate Belt Heritage Center is a small museum in Bangor PA which serves as a tribute to the early Slate Belt settlers by showcasing their unique blend of ethnic cultures. Valley Forge National Park -- 1400 North Outer Line Drive , King of Prussia, PA Visit the site of George Washington's winter encampment during the Revolutionary War. Friendly to homeschoolers, the education staff is happy to accomodate homeschooling groups for the Soldier's Life class, as well as, many others. Artifacts found at the site can be seen, free of charge, in the Visitor's Center. Washington's Headquarters charges a small fee, but the rest of the park is free to explore and experience.

Washington Crossing Historic Park -- 1112 River Road, Washington Crossing, PA This 500-acre historic park consists of two discontinuous tracts. The Lower Park interprets the story of General Washington and his army's crossing of the Delaware River in 1776 and subsequent victories at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. This area includes the historic structures of the McKonkey Ferry Inn/Tavern as well as the 19th century village of Taylorsville. Recreational facilities with picnic pavilions, Visitors Center, replica Durham boats and museum store are also part of the Lower Park. The Upper Park includes Bowman's Hill Tower (an observation tower, open seasonally), the historic Thompson-Neely house and grist mill, and a small military cemetery where members of Washington's army were buried during the 1776-77 encampment. |

William Brinton 1704 House and Historic Site -- 21 Oakland Road, West Chester, PA Set among the rolling hills of the Brandywine Valley, the William Brinton 1704 House is one of the most authentic restorations in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. In 1704, in order to accommodate his wife and growing family, the younger William Brinton built this stone house based upon his recollections of medieval English architecture. The result was a home of uncommon grace, now known as the William Brinton 1704 House. Room by room inventories taken at the death of the builder in 1751 provided a guide for the unusually authentic collection of furnishings. The house’s notable features include twenty-seven leaded casement windows, plentiful closets, an indoor bake oven, raised hearths and a colonial herb garden. |
