East Ely Railroad Depot Museum

The East Ely Railroad Depot Museum is located within one of the nation's most complete historic railroad yards. The depot has been restored to its original 1907 appearance. The museum, grounds, and shops remain hauntingly unchanged. Buildings, including the carpenter and electrical shops remain as they were left when the railroad closed in 1983. The pipefitters shop and blacksmith shop that surround the museum help tell the story of a proud time when Ely, and the railroad, helped "light a nation." The museum is one of seven operated within the Department of Cultural Affairs.

Eureka Sentinel Museum

The Eureka Sentinel Museum interprets the history of Eureka. You will find a complete press room from the 1800's complete with posters that were printed by the Eureka Sentinel and then plastered on the press room walls. In the mining history room you will see tools from the early days of mining, as well as historic stock certificates, ledgers and personal miners items. The Lead & Silver strikes in the 1860's were the beginning of Eureka. There are exhibits depicting school life in the early days of Eureka, a parlor and kitchen with many items that you will remember from grandma's house and items from the many fire companies, Fraternal organizations and military uniforms from the first and second world wars. View a late 1800's Eureka Barber Shop, complete with an oak barber chair. Don't miss the gift shop where you can purchase books about Eureka's history, soap and pottery made right here in Eureka, or get that special gift that says to your friends that you visited Eureka, Nevada.

Built in 1964 they were the first planetarium in the world to project full-dome movies (of time-lapse clouds and weather phenomena). After recently undergoing upgrades, Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center is now one of the first of a handful of planetariums around the world to utilize the Spitz SciDome digital projector, a high-resolution, state-of-the-art immersive visualization tool that produces extraordinarily bright and colorful 3-D images.

The Discovery Tour is a way to see, learn and appreciate what Hoover Dam is all about. This self-paced tour provides a quality, informative visit, while recognizing that certain security precautions must be taken to protect the facility, the workers and the visiting public. Talks by our guide staff are presented at a number of locations within the visitor facilities and various locations on top of the dam. A ticket is required to explore the Visitor Center and dam exhibits.

Midas School House

The restored Midas Schoolhouse is one of the many historic buildings found in the old mining town of Midas. Friends of Midas has restored and maintains the historic Midas Cemetery, Midas School building (which burned in 2005), the original jailhouse and outdoor displays of historic mining and ranching equipment. Plans are underway to rebuild the Midas School which is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. If visitors make their presence known, they will be directed to someone who will inform them of the history of this early 1900's mining camp. The Midas School playground equipment is the original and is still used by children of all ages.

The Department of Energy (DOE), and its predecessor agencies the Energy Research and Development Administration and the Atomic Energy Commission, conducted nuclear tests and other experiments at the Nevada Test Site, which helped maintain world peace, and the national security of the United States. Since the establishment of the Nevada Test Site in 1951, thousands of people from around the world -- senior citizens to college students -- have visited this vast outdoor laboratory that is larger than the state of Rhode Island, to see firsthand, artifacts and archaeological sites from the early settlers, to the many relics remaining from nuclear weapons tests, nuclear rocket experiments, and a variety of other defense, environmental, and energy-related programs.

The Northeastern Nevada Museum, a 40,000 square-foot facility, is located in the Elko City Park. Exhibits cover local history, natural history, local cultures, wildlife from around the world displayed in natural settings, a permanent art collection and rotating art exhibits. Research facilities include over 40,000 photos, area newspapers from 1872 to present, public records, manuscripts and a 1,000-volume research library. The museum includes a gift shop and 90-seat theater.

Valley of Fire State Park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75. Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest and largest state park, dedicated 1935. The valley derives its name from the red sandstone formations and the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert. Ancient trees and early man are represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000 year-old Indian petroglyphs. Popular activities include camping, hiking, picnicking and photography. The park offers a full-scale visitor center with extensive interpretive displays. Several group use areas are also available. The park is open all year.

Located in the historic Pioneer Hotel Building in downtown Elko, the Western Folklife Center is both a local and a regional cultural center with an exhibit gallery, 300-seat theater, 20-seat black box theater, saloon and gift shop. Over its 26-year history the Western Folklife Center has produced numerous educational exhibitions based on original research and fieldwork with traditional artists and art forms. In addition to its own exhibitions, the Folklife Center hosts traveling exhibitions in its Wiegand Gallery and also in the G Three Bar Theater.
