Canyon County Historical Museum

Canyon County's original train depot, built in 1903, is now the home of the Canyon County Historical Museum. The former depot is perhaps Idaho's finest example of Baroque revival architecture. Used as a depot until the 1920s, it now houses displays of both Canyon County and Union Pacific Railroad memorabilia, including a 1940s-era caboose that can be toured. Two model train layouts are a favorite among guests of all ages. Agricultural, medical, and household items can be viewed in the Annex, along with Rosabelle, the talking cow. A research library is available by appointment.
Central Idaho Historical Museum

This is a four-acre site on the National Register of Historic Places. Of eight buildings on the site, three are Finnish log construction, the remaining are board & batten construction, all built by Civilian Conservation Corps during 1936. As the headquarters of the Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association, the buildings were used as the fire warden and assistant warden's residences, crew quarters, a machine shop and more. Displays include a Murray Corliss steam engine, (which powered the Brown Tie & Lumber Co. in McCall), the restored fire warden's house and several other interpretive displays on the Idaho forest and history.

Dedicated to preserving the history of the Clearwater River area, this museum displays samples from their collection of more than 4,000 old pictures and historical artifacts from the past, including gold mining, logging, farming, the Nez Perce Indians and the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Individual tours are given on request. The historical society also offers programs on regional history at their meetings, held the 2nd Tuesday of each month, October through May.

This museum highlights the history of Adams County and the Council area. Adams County developed when gold was discovered in Warren and Florence, and a trail along the Weiser River, through the Council Valley, transported supplies to the mines from the Boise area. Large, inter-tribal Indian gatherings were once held in the Council Valley. The name Council came from these gatherings held in the area because early pioneers believed they were "council" meetings.

The Crane Historical Society was formed in 1984 for the purpose of perpetuating Harrison's colorful heritage. The museum contains historical information and artifacts of the Harrison area from the late 1890s and early 1900s. The old jail, a structure built around 1920, has been moved to the Crane House site. Visit the only authentic 1880s underground gold mine museum in the Northwest! This mine was worked from 1879 to 1881 and was only rediscovered in 1991. This is a AAA-approved attraction with an RV Park on site. Tour buses are welcome.

The Jefferson County Historical Museum has 14,000 sq. ft. of exhibitions on the pre-electric and early electric era, the history of Jefferson County and early photography. Local inventors, including Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of television, are also profiled. The first television tube, Indian artifacts and animal trophies are on display. It also features local writers such as Vardis Fisher, who wrote Mountain Man, which was made into a movie called Jerimiah Johnson, with Robert Redford.

The Historical Museum at St. Gertrude is located on the grounds of the Monastery of St. Gertrude in Cottonwood. Established in 1931, the museum houses a unique collection of over 70,000 artifacts with some 11,000 on display which reflect the early history of the region. Rediscover the pioneer days through exhibits from the early mining and farming era, plus a varied collection of minerals, firearms, Nez Perce artifacts and religious items. Highlights include the Rhoades Emmanuel Memorial, an extraordinary collection of fine Asian and European artifacts. The Museum hosts a dinner/dance in April and an annual Raspberry Festival on the first Sunday in August.

The Hughes House is a log structure constructed in 1902 in St. Maries as a men's club. It went on to become a doctor's office in 1906. In 1926 it was purchased by Raleigh Hughes and renovated. It remained in the Hughes family until 1989, when the Centennial Committee acquired the building and turned it into a museum. Get your Idaho passport stamped here and learn about St. Maries' history.

Idaho Military History Museum

Covering a broad spectrum of military history, via photos and artifacts, on your tour you will see Gowen Field as it was during World War II as well as Idahoans in the Philippine Insurrection through Operation Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom. A number of small arms are on display as are many of the guidons from units past, some of which have felt the breezes of distant lands and date back to the early years of the 20th century. There are also exhibits on both the Idaho Air and Army National Guard as well as Mountain Home Air Force Base, the United States Marines and the US Navy. A collection of armored vehicles is in the outdoor compound. Volunteer staff will be happy to help you with any questions that you may have about the displays. You should allow at least one hour for your visit.

Lemhi County was the first place Lewis and Clark crossed the Continental Divide into what is now Idaho and this museum features Lewis and Clark information. It also features the largest collection of Lemhi Shoshoni artifacts, including headdresses and peace pipes, plus the unique Ray Edwards Oriental Collection, donated by a local man who traveled extensively in Asia in the 1920's. Other Chinese artifacts date back to Chinese settlers in the area. Learn about Elmer Keith, a notorious sharp-shooter, from a display which includes his 5 gallon hat, pistol and boots.

MK Nature Center

The Morrison Knudsen Nature Center offers a one-of-a-kind fish and wildlife experience on a 4.6-acre site along the Boise River Greenbelt near downtown Boise. The Nature Center's stream walk and education building provide a glimpse of Idaho's many landscapes and abundant wildlife. The underwater viewing windows along the stream walk give visitors a fish-eye view of the world. The Visitors Center has a few exhibits-animal furs to touch, a local gopher snake, a local salamander, areas to make animal prints in a sandbox and various other small activities. It also has a great sitting are with a large window looking to watch birds. There are several books to identify the local birds. Outside there is a great paved nature walk. It guides you along a stream and the area's 4.6 acre park. Along the way you see several habitats. Also there are great viewing areas for the fish living in the river. They have even built an underwater viewing windows that are wonderful. There are plenty of signs and info along the way to make it a great self tour or you can schedule group tours.
National Oregon / California Trail Center

The National Oregon/California Trail Center is located near the Clover Creek Encampment of the Oregon Trail. The trail center depicts the 2000-mile, 5-month journey along the Oregon Trail in daily Living History tours. A Wagon Master guides visitors through an interactive tour that includes a simulated covered wagon ride generated by advanced computer technology. The Rails & Trails Museum within the heritage center displays artifacts, diaries, relics of the pioneers of Bear Lake Valley including railroad memorabilia. Allow 40-minutes minimum.
