Fisgard Lighthouse Historical Site
--
603 Fort Rodd Hill Road , Victoria, BC
The first lighthouse on Canada's west coast is still in operation! There hasn't been a keeper here since the light was automated in 1929, but every year many thousands of visitors step inside a real l9th century light, and capture some of the feeling of ships wrecked and lives saved. Built by the British in 1860, when Vancouver Island was not yet part of Canada, Fisgard's red brick house and white tower has stood faithfully at the entrance to Esquimalt harbour. Once a beacon for the British Royal Navy's Pacific Squadron, today Fisgard still marks home base for the Royal Canadian Navy. Inside the building are two floors of exhibits, dealing with shipwrecks, storms, far- flung lights, and the everyday working equipment of the light keeper a century ago. Right next to the tower stirs on the second floor, a specially-made video evokes the loneliness and isolation that was the lot of the l9th century keeper.

Gulf of Georgia Cannery
--
12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond , BC
Since its construction in 1894, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, in Steveston, has been a landmark for fishermen. This historic site commemorates Canada's West Coast fishing industry, and contains relics from the past, when the canneries operated day and night. A model of a 1930s production line is set up along one long L-shaped counter. Murals of fish and trawlers cover the walls; showcases full of glass net floats from Japan, various shiny salmon tins, and model boats help convey a sense of Steveston's heritage. Mountains of fishing gear and nets are arranged outside. It is hard to imagine that at the turn of the century there were 49 canneries on the Fraser River from Steveston to New Westminster - fifteen of those were in Steveston alone!

Gwaii Haanas lies in the southern part of Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands, 130 kilometres off the British Columbia coast and 640 kilometres north of Vancouver. It is a wild and remote area made up of some 138 islands that stretch 90 kilometres from north to south. Gwaii Haanas has no roads and few services and facilities.
