Summary:Buy Used and Drive It For Ten Years
Contributor:Sandra Jacobs
Savings:tens of thousands
Description:Compare what you would pay buying new cars and driving for five years to choosing to buy used and drive for at leat ten years.

You'll not only be buying half as many cars, but you'll skip the approximately 20% loss to depreciation when you drive that new car off the lot.
Downside:No new car smell.

However, a co-op member shared..."They sell 'new car smell' in little bottles that you can sprinkle in your car after vacuuming!"
Editor's Note:Co-op member Lauri had the following experience: When child #7 was coming along we were going to upgrade to a 15 passenger van. We bought one that was ONE year old and instead of paying $20,000, we paid ten! Good thing cause we had two more after her.

Another co-op member shared the following experience
:
I agree with this.

It is risky to a degree to buy used. You really don't know how it was treated, the problems that may not show up immediately, etc.
BUT at the same time you can put back the money you would be paying in a higher car payment to take care of any possible problems that may arise. And if they don't, then you are pocketing the money...not the creditor.

Fourteen years ago we leased a new truck for my husband. Our credit wasn't great and we were actually able to get a better interest rate and a much better vehicle that way than if we bought used. Two years later we financed the remaining amount left. We paid it off and he continued to drive it. It more than paid for itself. That was the key though...keeping it.

Well it finally was costing us too much for the repairs it needed. My dh just purchased a USED truck. We got a great price on it. Our plan is to get it paid off in short order and put money away for any potential repairs that it might need in the near future (it has high mileage on it). But it will still be worth having done this than paying THOUSANDS more for a new truck.

The guy at the dealership was suprised that my husband was the one to put all 240K miles on his truck. He said only 7% of people in the USA ever keep their vehicles long enough to get their title.

We hope to keep this truck for a long time too.
